More than 700 children have died in Somalia’s nutrition centers -UN

Hundreds of children have died in nutrition centers across Somalia, the UN children’s agency UNICEF said on Tuesday, a day after the world body warned that parts of Somalia will be affected by famine in the coming months.

“Some 730 children have been reported dead in food and nutrition centers across the country between January and July this year, but the numbers could be higher as many deaths go unreported,” he told a news briefing. Wafaa Saeed, UNICEF representative in Somalia.

The Horn of Africa region is headed for a fifth consecutive unsuccessful rainy season. A 2011 famine in Somalia claimed more than a quarter of a million lives, most of them children.
