Adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo finds its director

“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” is one of the most popular novels in recent years, and users of apps like TikTok have gone crazy with its story and like to share all kinds of details and interpretations.

Of course, with this present success, an adaptation was inevitable and Netflix acquired the rights to develop it, causing readers to spend a lot of time deciding which actress would be perfect for the lead role.

After much silence and little movement on the production, the company finally announced the director of the film: Leslye Headland.

The novel was published in 2017 and was an immediate sensation. The specialized critic praised the feminist aspects of the work and the way in which it focuses on a woman who made a legacy more for her husbands than for her own achievements in the world of show business, something that has left a mark on her complicated and a deep wound.

Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of the novel, was inspired by the personal and public lives of stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner, although she has always clarified that her protagonist is not a direct reference to any of them.

“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” tells the story of an artist who decides to auction off her most iconic dresses in order to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment. To promote this event, a reporter visits her to talk about her legacy in show business and thus begins a series of conversations where Evelyn Hugo recounts her life through the partners she had. In fact, the text is divided into seven parts, each one focused on one of her husbands, whom she defines in very particular ways.

Hollywood immediately fought over the rights to the novel and in 2019 Freeform and Fox took over the rights with the intention that the producers of “The L Word” would be in charge of the adaptation. The original idea was to develop a series to dedicate time to each episode, husband and Evelyn Hugo’s work moment, but production stalled and eventually the rights were lost. In 2022 it was confirmed that Netflix had acquired the rights, now with the proposal to make an exclusive film for its catalog.

After so many months of uncertainty, fans will be happy to know that things are beginning to move forward and could go faster from this moment on. Deadline confirms that Leslye Headland will be in charge of directing the film, which looks good thanks to her background in titles like “Russian Doll” (75%) and “Sleeping with Other People” (63%). The director has just finished “The Acolyte,” a new Star Wars proposal that is already generating very high expectations for its premiere next year.

On the other hand, Liz Tigelaar, best known for “Little Beautiful Things” (86%), “Little Fires Everywhere” (92%), and “Life Unexpected,” was in charge of writing the script that apparently is already approved and ready to go into production. For now, there is no word on the casting or which actresses could fight to win this important role, but the company may review the recommendations of fans who have made hundreds of videos about the perfect cast and will be very demanding in the process.

This is not the first adaptation of a work by the author, as “Daisy Jones & The Six” (74%), which addresses the music industry, recently premiered on Amazon. However, “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” is definitely her best-known work, having spent 120 weeks on The New York Times best-read list after she became a true social media sensation.

Jessica Chastain has stated on several occasions that she would like to be part of the project, something that fans approve of, but her participation has not been confirmed for now.
