Nintendo’s latest financial results have revealed that the company sold 8.3 million Nintendo Switch in the past six months, bringing the console’s lifetime sales to about 93 million.
At Nintendo financial report For the six months ending September 30, 2021, the company announced 8.3 million Switch hardware sales, of which 6.45 million were Standard Switches and 1.82 million were Switch Lite. While console sales decline year over year, the peak provided in 2020 by Animal Crossing: New Horizons has always been difficult to follow.
In the six month period, operating profit fell 24.5%, down to 219.9 billion yen ($ 1.9 billion) from the 291.4 billion yen ($ 2.5 billion) received during the same six months in 2020. Net sales also decreased, falling 18.9% up to 624.5 billion yen ($ 5.4 billion).
Parallel to this fall, Nintendo announced that it lowered its annual Switch shipping forecast from 25.5 million units to 24 million units., pointing out the effects of the global semiconductor shortage. However, the company expect to see more success in the near future thanks to the Switch OLED model, Metroid Dread and the next Pokémon games: Shiny Diamond and Shining Pearl, not to mention Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
The additional 8.3 million copies make Nintendo Switch reaches 92.87 million consoles sold. That means it’s getting close to Nintendo’s biggest bestseller, the Wii, which sold 101.63 million consoles. Regardless, the Switch has already eclipsed Nintendo’s third-best-selling console, the NES, which sold 61.91 million copies.
In software, Switch has sold 681 million games to date. The best-selling game in the system is still Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 38.74 million copies sold. Unsurprisingly after its popularity in 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons ranked No. 2 with 34.85 million copies sold. For its part, Super Mash Bros. Ultimate occupies the final position of the podium with 25.71 million copies sold.
In other Nintendo related news, Nintendo 64 controllers for Switch have been sold out until 2022. Similarly, players have been reporting problems with the N64 games included in the Switch Online Expansion Pack. And speaking of that console, Super Mario 3D All-Stars has been updated to allow to play Super Mario 64 with that same N64 controller that has been exhausted.
