Another Shooting Occurs in El Paso

Armed violence in the United States continues as another shooting occurred on February 15 at the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas. Reports of shots were first recorded in the food area at 5:05 pm local time.

Three Injured and One Dead

The shooting left a total of three injured and one person dead. Local authorities have reported that the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, while two suspects are now in police custody.

Off-Duty Police Officer Praised for Taking Action

During a second press conference, Acting Police Chief Peter Pacillas revealed that all those involved in the shooting were male. He also praised the heroic actions of an off-duty police officer who subduing one of the shooters for three minutes. So far, the retired police officer has not been identified; however, the FBI has credited him with being able to detain one of the suspects in a matter of minutes.

Seventy Mass Shootings So Far in 2023

The Cielo Vista Mall is located adjacent to a Walmart where a mass shooting took place in 2019, which killed 25 people. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 70 mass shootings in the United States so far this year. The archive classifies a mass shooting as an incident that results in four or more injuries or fatalities, not including the shooter.

The tragic events of shootings continue to plague the United States, bringing into question gun laws and regulations. The increasing number of shootings is an issue that must be addressed in order to prevent further loss of life.
