Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine dubs migrant pet-eating claim a false ‘garbage’ claim

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine strongly criticized claims made by former President Donald Trump regarding Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. Trump alleged in a recent debate that these immigrants were resorting to eating dogs and cats, a statement DeWine labeled as “hurtful” and “not helpful.”

“There’s a lot of garbage on the internet, and this is a piece of garbage that was simply not true. There’s no evidence of this at all,” DeWine stated during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.” He further highlighted that such remarks do not reflect the positive impact that immigrants have on the Springfield community.

The governor emphasized that both the mayor of Springfield and the city’s police chief have confirmed there is no truth to the claims made by Trump and his associates, including Ohio Senator JD Vance. DeWine’s remarks follow the social media rumors intensified by Trump’s comments during last week’s presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

These unfounded allegations have unfortunately led to threats against Haitian immigrants in the area. DeWine pointed out that while the arrival of immigrants has brought some challenges to Springfield, including strain on local resources, they have also significantly contributed to the community and its economy. “We have challenges every day we are working on those challenges,” DeWine acknowledged. He asserted that Haitian immigrants in Springfield are legal residents who arrived seeking work. “Ohio is on the move, and Springfield has really made a great resurgence with many companies coming in,” he added.
