Paraguayan Vice President Hugo Velázquez said on Friday that he will resign from his presidential candidacy and resign next week, after being accused by the United States of significant acts of corruption.

“To take care of the movement (…) it is my obligation to step aside,” Velázquez told Monumental radio station in Asunción. He added that he will submit his resignation as vice president next week to bring the office “in order.”

The United States singled out Velázquez for his involvement in significant corruption, accusing him on Friday of offering a bribe of more than $1 million to a public official “to obstruct an investigation that threatened the vice president and his financial interests.” [L1N2ZO0Z0]
