Atlantic City, N.J. — Patti Scialfa, renowned musician and wife of Bruce Springsteen, revealed in a recent documentary that she has been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. The documentary, which aired on Sunday, shares insights into her personal struggles and the impact of the disease on her life and career.
At the age of 71, Scialfa disclosed that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018. This diagnosis has significantly affected her ability to tour with the E Street Band. In the documentary titled “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” she opened up about the challenges her condition presents.
“This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” Scialfa explained in the film. Despite the limitations, she expressed her joy when she gets to participate. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat,” she shared. “That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”
The documentary captures not only the dynamics within the band but also highlights the personal impacts of health challenges. Scialfa has become accustomed to her adjusted lifestyle, finding solace in the moments she can still connect with fans and perform. Her resilience shines through as she navigates her health while remaining a vital part of the music community.
Following the documentary’s premiere in Toronto, a spokesperson for Scialfa confirmed that no further information would be released about her health status, including details about any current treatment she may be undergoing.
Scialfa has had a long-standing musical career marked by her contribution to the E Street Band since 1984. Her marriage to Springsteen took place in 1991, and together they have enjoyed a fruitful partnership both personally and professionally. In 2014, she was honored with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a testament to her talents and influence in the music industry.
In light of health issues within the Springsteen family, Bruce Springsteen himself has faced his share of challenges over the past two years, having to postpone several tour dates due to peptic ulcer disease and issues concerning his vocal health. Nevertheless, he remains committed to performing, with an upcoming appearance slated at a music festival in Asbury Park, a town closely tied to his musical legacy, on September 15.
The dedication both Springsteen and Scialfa have shown to their craft and fans continues, despite the obstacles they encounter. Their journey reflects a deep connection not only to their music but also to each other, showcasing both strength and vulnerability in the face of life’s hardships.
As the couple navigates these personal battles, their fans stand united in support, celebrating their artistry and resilience in the music scene.
