Pemex is affected by fires at three facilities on the same day

Three fires broke out at facilities in Mexico and the United States operated by Mexican state oil company Pemex on Thursday, leaving five missing and eight injured as of Thursday night.

Five people were missing after a fire at a storage facility in Veracruz state that had sent three others to a hospital, the company said in a statement.

The cause of the fire, which has already been put out, has yet to be determined, the company added.

Pemex confirmed in a later statement late Thursday that another fire at its Minatitlan refinery, also in Veracruz, was under control after injuring five people.

That fire had not disrupted refinery operations, Pemex said, adding that “it is presumed that the possible cause of the fire was product runoff on a hot surface.”

A third fire was also reported Thursday at a unit at the petroleum of Pemex in Deer Park, Texas. The alert was later updated with a notification that the situation was resolved.

Earlier this week, at least two people died after a vehicle collision inside a Pemex refinery in the Mexican state of Hidalgo, local media reported.
