On September 16, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that their veteran center, Sidney Crosby, has signed a two-year contract extension worth $17.4 million. This new agreement underscores Crosby’s enduring commitment to the franchise as he continues his illustrious NHL career.
Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas expressed deep appreciation for Crosby’s impact on the game and the organization. He remarked, “There are no words to properly describe what Sidney Crosby means to the game of hockey, the city of Pittsburgh, and the Penguins organization.” Dubas continued, stating, “Sidney is the greatest player of his generation and one of the greatest players in the history of the game.”
Highlighting Crosby’s dedication, Dubas added, “His actions today show why he is one of hockey’s greatest winners and leaders. Sid is making a tremendous personal sacrifice in an effort to help the Penguins win, both now and in the future, as he has done for his entire career.”
With this extension, Crosby is now locked in with the Penguins until the end of the 2026-27 season. The 10-time All-Star was selected by the Penguins as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft and has achieved remarkable success throughout his career. He has won three Stanley Cup titles, among numerous awards including the Ted Lindsay Award, Art Ross Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, Hart Memorial Trophy, Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, and the Mark Messier Leadership Award during his 19 seasons in the NHL.
Crosby, now 37 years old, had an impressive performance last season, recording 42 goals and 52 assists over 82 games. In total, he has amassed 592 goals and 1,004 assists in his first 1,272 games with the Penguins.
The center not only leads the franchise in games played, even-strength goals, even-strength points, and game-winning goals but also ranks second in franchise history behind only Mario Lemieux for career goals, assists, and total points.
Crosby’s leadership as captain of the Penguins for 17 seasons ranks as the second-longest tenure in franchise history, surpassing all but Steve Yzerman’s 19 years with the Detroit Red Wings.
Dubas commented on Crosby’s legendary status, stating, “Sid’s work ethic, focus, character, and mastery of his craft are the stuff of legends to those inside of hockey.” He emphasized that Crosby’s daily commitment to improving and leading the Penguins sets him apart, surpassing even his legendary status.
The Penguins are slated to face off against the Buffalo Sabres in a preseason game. Fans can expect to see Crosby’s continued excellence as he leads his team into another season.
