The head of the Xbox division at Microsoft, Phil Spencer, has practically confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI will be an Xbox console exclusive game.
In an interview with the magazine British GQ, Phil Spencer has stated that he sees the Skyrim sequel as a similar case to that of another Bethesda title, Starfield., which was confirmed for Xbox Series X / S and PC as an exclusive title earlier this year.
At least in part his reasoning seems to boil down to what the Xbox ecosystem can offer its exclusives, including cloud games, Xbox Live services, etc:
“It is not about punishing any other platform, as I fundamentally believe that all platforms can continue to grow“, dijo Spencer a GQ. “But to be on Xbox, I want us to be able to carry the full package of what we have. And that would be true when I think of Elder Scrolls VI. That would be true when I think of any of our franchises“.
Ever since Xbox bought Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media, The Elder Scrolls 6’s position as a possible exclusive has been a topic of debate. As Bethesda’s biggest franchise, there’s been a lot of talk about whether Xbox would benefit or hurt by allowing the next The Elder Scrolls game to be released on competing platforms.
Microsoft had already said that Bethesda games would be released “first or better“and Xbox, but Todd Howard of Bethesda said it was “hard to imagine“That The Elder Scrolls 6 was an Xbox exclusive. Now, it seems that the pendulum has changed direction, and Spencer is much more optimistic that the long-awaited RPG will stay on Microsoft-controlled platforms..
In another part of the article, Todd Howard reiterated that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still being designed, but added that the end goal of the game remains similar to that of previous installments in the series:
“You reread a review of the first Elder Scrolls. And then you read The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and then The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. You cross out a couple of things. And they read the same. ‘You’re out there and oh my gosh, it feels so real.’ People change. Technology changes. But the ultimate goal is still to make it feel like you’ve been transported when you start the game.“.
It will still be several years before we play the gameespecially after hearing Todd Howard’s statements to MRT about Starfield, which is the company’s top priority today. He also commented that there is an idea about what you want to do with Fallout 5, although the waiting time will also be important.
