Jesse Marsch expressed no resentment over being overlooked for the U.S. men’s national team coaching position, stating that he is currently more enthusiastic about coaching Canada. Marsch recently guided the Canadian team to a historic 2-1 triumph over the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) in Kansas City.
Having taken the helm of the Canadian team in May, Marsch led them to a commendable fourth-place finish in Copa América. Earlier this year, he had interviewed with the U.S. Soccer Federation before Gregg Berhalter was reinstated as coach in June.
In a podcast interview shortly after his appointment, Marsch revealed that he felt he “wasn’t treated very well” during the U.S. Soccer selection process. However, after the significant victory over the USMNT, he clarified, “I’m not bitter.” He emphasized his transparent communication style with the media, stating, “Most people, if they ask me a question, I answer it.”
Berhalter was dismissed from his role as U.S. coach following a disappointing early exit in the Copa América. Reports indicate that Mauricio Pochettino is poised to take over the USMNT, with an official announcement anticipated soon. In the meantime, Berhalter’s former assistant Mikey Varas served as the interim coach for the match against Canada.
Marsch conveyed his preference: “I’d much rather coach Canada than the U.S. right now.” He highlighted the positive mentality cultivated within the Canadian squad, remarking on their commitment to one another and their shared passion for representing the national team.
He continued, “You can see how much they love playing for the national team and they’re willing to put their careers and lives on the line to be the best they can be for each other and for the team. I wouldn’t change coaching this team right now for anything in the world.”
During the friendly match at Children’s Mercy Park, Jacob Shaffelburg provided Canada with an early lead, showcasing a dominant performance in the first half. Jonathan David further secured the advantage with a goal in the 58th minute, marking only the second time Canada has achieved victory on U.S. soil, despite a late goal from Luca de la Torre that narrowed the score.
Marsch expressed his satisfaction following the match, stating, “Of course I enjoyed it. I was certain that we would play well. I wasn’t certain that we would win, but I was confident we would perform well.”
In reflecting on the significance of the win and his role as Canada’s coach, Marsch’s sentiments underline the growing potential and unity within the Canadian team. The victory serves as a testament to the progress the national team has made under his leadership, as they look forward to future challenges on the international stage.
