Prosecutors: Islamic Extremist Planned to Attack German Soldiers at Lunch

Authorities in Germany have arrested a 27-year-old Syrian man in connection with a foiled plot to attack German soldiers during their lunch break in Munich. The plan aimed to inflict maximum casualties and instill a sense of insecurity among the wider public.

The Munich public prosecutor’s office stated that the suspect is believed to be a supporter of radical Islamic ideology. It was reported that he had acquired two machetes, each measuring about 40 centimeters (15.75 inches), earlier this month, intending to use them in his attack against the soldiers.

After his arrest on Thursday, the suspect appeared before a judge on Friday. His identity has not been disclosed, adhering to privacy regulations in Germany.

This arrest follows a tragic event on August 23 in Solingen, where an attack resulted in three deaths and eight injuries. In that incident, a 26-year-old Syrian, reportedly an asylum-seeker, was detained. He was slated for deportation to Bulgaria last year but evaded this process for some time.

The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the Solingen attack, although it did not provide any evidence to support its assertion.

The recent acts of violence have deeply unsettled Germany, bringing immigration policies back into sharp focus within the nation’s political discourse. In light of these incidents, the German interior ministry has decided to extend temporary border controls at all nine of its frontiers. These measures are expected to remain in effect for six months, potentially straining relationships within the European Union.
