Sony Corporation has presented this Wednesday the financial report corresponding to the first quarter of fiscal year 2021 (Q1 / FY2021) ended on June 30. The Japanese firm begins a course marked by the lack of stock of its new home console, PlayStation 5, which is already above the 10.1 million units sold around the world; slightly below the PS4 units distributed in the same period of time, 10.4 million. In regards to the veteran PlayStation 4, Sony’s previous desktop already exceeds 116.4 million consoles; It is the second best-selling console in the history of the company.

PS5, the fastest console to reach 10 million units sold

As Sony confirmed just a few days ago, PS5 had sold until July 18. more than 10 million units; the fastest-selling home console to date. Despite the severe lack of supply, with a demand well above the current supply – the stock problems will last until 2022 – Sony Interactive Entertainment, led in the PlayStation department by Jim Ryan, is confident of continuing to break records of distribution. During the period of April to June 2021, Sony sold 2.3 million units of PlayStation 5.

Going forward, selling more than 22.6 million PS5 units next fiscal year (April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023), which would be an absolute distribution record for the brand, exceeding 22 $ 6 million from the first PlayStation in fiscal 1998.

PS4 exceeds 116.4 million units sold since launch

The rate of sales of PS4 confirms its slowdown (0.5 million units during the past quarter), it has ceased to be Sony’s leading platform and, from now on, will be nourished by large-scale videogames in this intergenerational period, which will continue —at least – two years, since in 2022 it will continue to receive titles that were once exclusive to PS5. We are talking about works such as Horizon Forbidden West, God of War (sequel) and Gran Turismo 7. However, it is already above 116.4 million units sold.

At the level of software, Sony declares in the document sales above the 63.6 million video games During this quarter, a figure that includes both physical and digital units of titles for PS5 and PS4. Of that amount, 10.5 million games are first party. In this regard, it can be said that the digital market has accounted for 71% of total sales during the period that includes the months of April to June 2021.

One last piece of information, this time not so positive, is that they have registered 104 million active players on PlayStation Network during this final quarter; below the 114 million players in the same period in 2020. The main cause of this drop may be the home confinement to which millions of people were subjected in the spring of last year.

Despite these good results, the volume of units sent to stores will continue to be limited by the lack of stock, a situation against the will of the company, but irremediable due to the lack of semiconductor materials. It was last April when Foxconn, the world’s largest manufacturer of electronic components, assured that the shortage of chips and semiconductors will last until the second quarter of 2022.
