Quentin Tarantino: Sex Scenes are not Part of My Vision of Cinema

Sex scenes in movies have always been a hotly debated topic. While some view them as essential to the story, others believe they are often gratuitous and exploitative. Director Quentin Tarantino has expressed that they are unnecessary for his filmography. Tarantino believes that sex scenes are a “pain” to shoot and that everyone is very tense during the process.

The director has never made sex scenes an integral focus in his work, but he has explored human nature through the use of graphic violence which, in some of his films, has included episodes of sexual violence. Actors and actresses in these types of scenes have reported the need for the same level of professionalism and care while filming them. Therefore, it seems that Tarantino cannot escape the “problem” on set.

Measures have been taken, including the creation of the position of intimacy coordinator, to regulate and restrict filming. This has created the opportunity for equally provocative stagings with a level of intimacy that advocates much more than provocation, benefiting the artistic proposal on both sides of the screen.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement towards more realistic and honest portrayals of sex in movies, along with a push for greater diversity and representation on screen. However, the mishandling of erotic scenes can damage the general message of a story, passing off an easy trick to attract an audience as an entirely valid narrative device.

This fact may be clearer in productions that celebrate eroticism such as Bridgerton, Sex and the City, or Girls. Regardless, some of the most iconic sex scenes have exposed the necessity for accurate portrayal of the relationships between characters. In this way, the audience can view their intimacy and vulnerability, and receive honesty from the depicted story.

Tarantino has said that if there ever was a sex scene necessary to the story, he would film it. However, this has never been the case. One of his most iconic films, From Dusk till Dawn, featured a scene in which Tarantino’s character drank tequila from Salma Hayek’s leg. Thus, while sex scenes may not be part of his vision of cinema, he has not avoided them entirely in his work.
