Twice in a row within an interval of less than twenty-four hours. After more than a year and a half with hardly any news about him -beyond specific leaks on social networks or images captured by the paparazzi-, King Juan Carlos has been seen in public during the Abu Dhabi Tennis Tournament, where he has resided since the summer of 2020. It was on Friday the 17th when Felipe VI’s father reappeared in the stands of the International Tennis Center to witness the match between Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal and a day later, on Saturday 18, he returned to witness the new meeting between the athlete from Manacor and the Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
Accompanied by several people, with fairly tanned skin, wearing a mask and dressed casually, the monarch was calm and enjoyed a relaxed day on both occasions. In fact, Felipe VI’s father took the opportunity to approach the players’ room and spent a while chatting with Reef Nadal and with his coach, Carlos Moya, with whom he photographed. For a long time, Don Juan Carlos has had a close relationship with the Mallorcan athlete, whose liaison he attended in October 2019.
The reappearance in public of King Juan Carlos comes in an especially relevant week for him. On the one hand, the House of HM the King has distributed the Christmas greetings of both the current Kings and the parents of Felipe VI but, even more important, last Monday, the Swiss prosecutor Yves Bertossa decided to close the proceedings that were open on the donation of sixty-five million to Juan Carlos I, since it has not been able to prove that these funds had an illicit origin or that they were laundered.
With this scenario, already a few weeks ago, Infanta Elena declared in a public act that she had conveyed to King Felipe the wish of King Juan Carlos to return to Spain to spend ChristmasAlthough it appears to have not yet received an answer to this question. Don Juan Carlos’ intention would be to be in Madrid this December 20, a date that also coincides with the birthday of his eldest daughter and to remain in Spain until after her birthday.
However, based on his reappearance in Abu Dhabi, it appears that he will still be in the Emirates for the time being. What is not known is whether Doña Elena will take advantage of her anniversary to travel there and spend this special date with her father.
The last time Don Juan Carlos was seen at a public event was in February 2020, just before the pandemic, when he attended a match at the Bernabéu with Florentino Pérez. Shortly before he had been at the funeral of the Infanta Doña Pilar in the monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, where he coincided with the Kings, as well as with the infantas doña Elena and doña Cristina.
