Antonio Gala, Renowned Author and Playwright, Dies at 92

Antonio Gala, a renowned author and playwright, has passed away at the age of 92 in Córdoba, as confirmed by the Board of Trustees of the Antonio Gala Foundation and his family in a statement. Gala had been away from public life for several years.

To bid their last farewell, a burning chapel will be installed on Monday in the assembly hall of the Antonio Gala Foundation (Córdoba) open from 10 am to 5 pm for the citizens.

A Passionate Writer

Born in Brazatortas (Ciudad Real) in 1930, Gala always felt Cordovan at heart and adoption. As a child, he showed a true passion for the world of letters and writing. At four, he wrote his first short story, and by five, he finished a play.

During his university days, he studied law in Seville and philosophy, letters, political science, and economics in Madrid. He published his first poems in literary magazines, founded Aljibe and Arquero de poesía with colleagues Gloria Fuertes and Julio Mariscal.

Awards and Literary Success

Gala’s first great literary success came in 1959 with the collection of poems Intimate Enemy, which earned him the Adonais Prize for Poetry. After this work, many others of different genres followed, from the theater with The Green Fields of Eden and Rings for a Lady, to prose with the novel The Crimson Manuscript.

Gala was also honored with numerous awards, including the Planeta Award, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, and the Calderón de la Barca National Theater Award.

Gala’s Journalism

In 2011, Gala joined the industry as an opinion columnist in the newspaper El Mundo, criticizing social and political events of the time. He announced in the same newspaper in 2011 that he had colon cancer, and after several years in treatment, he gave the happy news in 2015 that he had overcome the disease.

A Patron of the Arts

In 2002, Gala promoted the creation of a foundation to support young people in his beloved Córdoba creators of different disciplines by granting scholarships for their projects. He was always very involved in this project, participating in the center’s activities and personally meeting the beneficiaries.

Regarding his personal sphere, little is known about his family, since he was always very reserved in that aspect. Gala will be remembered as a passionate writer, playwright, and patron of the arts whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
