The Columbus Blue Jackets have officially appointed franchise legend Rick Nash as their president of hockey operations, marking a significant step for both Nash and the organization.
Nash, who was the first overall pick in the 2002 NHL Draft, played for the Blue Jackets from 2002 to 2012. Over his tenure, he became the franchise’s all-time leader in goals with 289 and assists with 258. His impactful career came to an end in 2018 after stints with the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. Following his retirement, Nash returned to Columbus in June 2019, taking on the role of special assistant to the general manager.
Two years into his assistant role, Nash was promoted to director of player development, further solidifying his involvement in the team’s growth.
General manager Don Waddell praised Nash in a statement, highlighting his intelligence and importance within the hockey operations leadership team. Waddell expressed enthusiasm for Nash’s promotion, stating, “Rick Nash is an extremely bright guy who has become an important part of our hockey operations leadership group. He is very passionate about the Columbus Blue Jackets and this community and has been a great resource for me since I arrived here in late May. Rick made a significant impact on this organization as a player and will continue to do so in his role as director of hockey operations.”
Nash served as the Blue Jackets’ captain from 2008 to 2012. His impressive career also featured five All-Star selections and a notable achievement in 2004 when he won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy for leading the NHL in goals. In March 2022, the franchise honored Nash by retiring his iconic number 61.
Alongside Nash’s new role, the Blue Jackets announced additional appointments within their management structure. Zach Abdou has been named the senior manager of hockey operations, while Basil McRae takes on the role of director of pro scouting. These changes signal a new era for the organization as they aim to build on their past successes and move forward with a strong leadership team.
As the Blue Jackets embark on this next chapter, Rick Nash’s return to the organization is seen as a pivotal moment. His deep understanding of the team and connection to the Columbus community are expected to play major roles in shaping the franchise’s future direction.
The Blue Jackets are looking to rekindle success, and with Nash at the helm of hockey operations, there is optimism among fans and the franchise alike for what lies ahead.
