Per Google Trend data, there has been a 10-year high in searches for the term Roman Empire this month, making it nab the spot as the top trending subject related to facts. The search engine witnessed over 600 percent searches in the past week, with the search input like ‘Do guys think about the Roman Empire?’

What is the Trend all About? 

To put it simply, this trend is based on the premise that men think about the Roman Empire more often than women, and so often, women in their lives are shocked to learn about its frequency. 

The trend has propagated from an Instagram post and hasn’t stopped ever since. In fact, it spread more on TikTok, where the hashtag #RomanEmpire has garnered 1.2 billion views. Many users, especially women, seem to participate in the ongoing trend. They would simply pick up their phone cameras, approach a man in their lives, and ask them ‘how often do you think about the Roman Empire?’

While men began to answer their questions, it would also put them in utter confusion, especially when women would ask this question many times a day. As per one of the users, “There’s no way this is real, right? My (partner, dad, brother, friend, etc.) couldn’t possibly think about ancient Rome than often.” 

The users began posting the reactions of men on their social media handles, prompting more numbers of users to jump on the bandwagon. So, why is the frequency of thinking about the Roman Empire more in men than women?

Another one responded he thinks about the sewage system created during the empire each time he uses a bathroom. One more user stated everyone should think about it more often as many aspects of modern-day life are closely related to history.

As stated, the trend did not start on TikTok itself but transitioned from Instagram to the former. A reference Instagram post was created by Gaius Flavius, a Roman reenactor who keeps posting about historical content. He created this post on the 19th of August and entertained 55,000 likes (a small number compared to the true reach). The post reads: 

“Ladies, many of you do not realize how often men think about the Roman Empire. Ask your husband/boyfriend/father/brother – you will be surprised by their answer!” 

While the posts could have been given a blind eye and taken as any other random Instagram post, they didn’t. On the contrary, it piqued enough interest and drew massive attention from the TikTokers. More numbers of women started engaging in this post and responded to the original videos with their own until it became a full-fledged trend of hundreds of independent videos and a hashtag #romanempiretrend. Currently, this hashtag entertains 31.1 million views. 

Is the Trend Relevant? 

One of the questions that you might want to seek an answer to is if this trend is relevant or not. 

Well, it clearly depends on who you ask. While some users see it as a phenomenon or a light-hearted moment shared on social media, others consider this trend to have the potential to tell us something about ourselves. As per some experts, it also illustrates something deeper about what takes up space in the social consciousness of the two genders. 

Some Celebrities have Joined the League 

You will be surprised to learn that the Roman Empire Trend is not merely restricted to regular consumers of social media. This trend has become equally popular among a few celebrities. Australian singer Firerose asked her fiancé, Billy Ray Cyrus, how many times a day he thinks about the Roman Empire. In reply, he mentioned, “15 to 20 max.” He also specified he thinks mostly about gladiators over everything. 

Another singer and actress, Kira Kosarin, took part in this trend and posted a video for her 31 million followers, asking her fiancé how often he thinks about the empire. Her fiancé replied, “Three times a day, there’s so much to think about.” 

Actress Lisa Rinna asked her husband the same question. However, he answered a little differently – “Not very often. Maybe a couple of times a year.”

There are Contradictions Too! 

While many people have been admirers of the great Roman Empire, some have taken this trend to a whole different level by relating it to Nicki Minaj. In one of the videos that garnered huge numbers of likes, a woman asks her husband what he thinks of the Roman Empire. He replied, “Like the Nicki Minaj album?” 

Though Nicki Minaj doesn’t have an album by this name, she has an album called Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. There is another video, too, with 250,000 likes twisting the trend’s gender expectations. A woman asks her girlfriend how often she thinks about the Roman Empire. “The Nicki Minaj fans?” she replies. 

“I think about the Roman Empire every damn day”, said one user before displaying the playlist of Minaj’s songs. “This is my Roman Empire, and I don’t even know if there is another one.”
