Colombian President Gustavo Francisco Petro Visits Spain

The President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Francisco Petro, is currently on a two-day state visit to Spain along with his wife, Verónica Alcocer. The visit aims to strengthen the ties and bilateral relations between the two countries. To honor the occasion, King Felipe and Queen Letizia hosted a gala dinner at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Doña Letizia Wears a Sophisticated Dress

Doña Letizia was dressed in a sophisticated crimson red mermaid-style dress with short sleeves featuring ruffles in the shoulder and hip area. She paired the dress with platform heels matching in hue. She added her stunning Mellerio floral tiara as a diadem, which is one of the royal jeweler’s most valuable treasures.

The Jewels That the Queen Chose

The Mellerio floral tiara, sculpted in platinum and diamonds by the historic Mellerio jewelry store in Paris in 1867, was gifted to Doña Sofía by the Spanish Government during her wedding. The tiara is made up of three flowers, with its stem and respective leaves, the central one being the largest.

President Petro’s Dress Code

The dress code for the gala dinner was a tailcoat for men, but President Petro chose not to wear it. In an interview with W Radio, the President commented that he felt uncomfortable with a tie or a tailcoat as it had associations with elite and anti-democracy.

The Grand Hall of the Royal Palace of Madrid

The dinner was held in the Great Hall of the Royal Palace of Madrid, which is one of the largest in the world. The hall is 400 meters long, illuminated by bronze lamps, and has a table suitable for 130 diners. The walls also host works of art such as tapestries by Vertumnos and Pomona, Chinese jugs from the 18th century, and French vases from the 19th century.

Upcoming Events

On Thursday afternoon, the President and the First Lady of Colombia will host a reception in El Pardo to honor King Felipe and Queen Letizia. Following this, the King and Queen will travel to London for the coronation of Carlos III, which is not attended by any other member of the Spanish Royal Family.
