The Russian shipyard Zvezdá has already laid the keel of the Rossia (Leader) icebreaker, the most powerful in the world and the lead of the 10510 project, reported this Monday RIA Novoti referring to the Russian deputy prime minister, Yuri Borisov.
The senior official recalled in a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that the construction of the ship is carried out in the “great shipyard” that is being built in the city of Bolshoi Kamen, in the Primorsky region (Far East of Russia), whose dry dock is now complete.
“We hope you can see it with your own eyes in the Forum [económico] from Vladivostok: has already been placed [la quilla de] the new icebreaker, the super powerful Leader, “Borisov said.
In April 2020, the Rosatomflot company, which operates the entire Russian fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers and is part of the country’s Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom), and the Zvezdá shipyards closed the contract for the construction of the first nuclear-powered icebreaker. of project 10510, which stipulates the commissioning of the ship in 2027.
In total, the construction of three ships of this project is planned until 2032. Russia needs a powerful fleet of icebreakers to develop the Northern Maritime Route, an alternative – and much shorter – route to the Suez Canal to transport goods between Asia and Europe.
The icebreaker will be equipped with two RITM-400 nuclear reactors and will have a power delivered to the propellers of 120 MW. It will be the first ship of this class in the world that will be able to make way for ships through the Russian Arctic throughout the year, thanks to its ability to break ice blocks up to 4 meters thick.
The Rossia icebreaker will have a maximum speed of 22 knots (in waters not covered by ice), 209 meters long and 47.7 meters wide, and will displace almost 70,000 tons.
