On Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, the Minnesota Vikings made headlines with a 99-yard drive that marked their longest since 2008. This impressive sequence of plays was highlighted by two accurate throws from quarterback Sam Darnold to star receiver Justin Jefferson, who was visibly pleased with his new quarterback.
After the drive capped off with a touchdown pass, head coach Kevin O’Connell caught a glimpse of Jefferson’s reaction and remarked, “I saw Justin’s face after that drive, and I think he felt pretty darn good about who is throwing him the football.”
In his debut with the Vikings, Darnold played exceptionally well, completing 19 of 24 attempts for 208 yards along with two touchdowns. Remarkably, he connected on his first 12 throws, which highlighted his ability to avoid the mistakes that had previously defined his career with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers. A third-quarter interception interrupted his otherwise stellar performance, but his passer rating would have soared to a career-high of 130.6 without that setback.
The uncertainty surrounding Darnold’s capabilities as a full-time starter has led many to predict that the Vikings may struggle this season. However, during this game, he effectively utilized the team’s offensive talent while maintaining composure and making smart decisions.
“The biggest thing is just playing with confidence,” Darnold expressed. “We’ve got a great offense. We’ve got a great system. If I just play on time and do all the things we need to do to execute, we’ll be alright.”
Throughout training camp, Jefferson has been encouraging Darnold to trust his instincts and throw the ball confidently, even when faced with tight coverage. Their chemistry shone through in a pivotal second-and-10 situation on the Vikings’ 10-yard line during the second quarter. Despite being closely pursued by two defenders, Darnold made a remarkable throw down the left sideline, allowing Jefferson to secure a 44-yard gain. This was the highlight of the team’s successful drive, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown on fourth down.
“That’s going to be something we’re going to need throughout the season,” Jefferson said. “I’m just giving him that confidence, giving him that juice to throw me the ball whenever I’m doubled. That was him throwing it to a spot and me going to get it. That’s going to happen a majority of the time this season. He’s got to understand that even when I’m doubled, I’m still open and I’m going to make that play.”
While players and coaches alike were pleased with Darnold’s performance, they remained cautious about overhyping the result. The defense faced in this matchup was seen as lacking in certain aspects, and they anticipate a more challenging game against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2.
Darnold signed a one-year contract worth $10 million in March, stepping in to fill the quarterback slot until the Vikings’ draft pick, J.J. McCarthy from Michigan, could take over. Unfortunately for McCarthy, a season-ending injury during training camp has left the starting role squarely on Darnold’s shoulders for now.
The expectations for Darnold were relatively low coming into the season, yet he managed to meet or exceed them in a significant way on Sunday.
“I don’t think anybody’s surprised that Sam Darnold played the way he did today,” O’Connell stated confidently. “I know I’m certainly not. I tried to foreshadow as much as I could throughout training camp, and I’m just proud of him.”
