Sarah Huckabee Sanders Mimics JD Vance, Criticizes Kamala Harris on Kids

During a town hall event in Flint, Michigan, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who previously served as the White House press secretary, directed criticism towards Vice President Kamala Harris, implying that her lack of biological children leaves her without humility. Sanders remarked, “My kids keep me humble. Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn’t have anything keeping her humble.”

This sentiment mirrored previous comments made by Senator JD Vance from Ohio, Trump’s running mate, who faced backlash for his remarks about women without biological children. In 2021, Vance described a leadership class in the U.S. as being comprised of “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made.” He questioned the logic behind entrusting the country to people without direct stakes in its future, citing political figures like Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as examples.

Despite their lack of biological children, Harris has two stepchildren, while Buttigieg and his husband adopted twins in August 2021. The comments made by Huckabee Sanders arose as she shared a touching moment involving her daughter getting ready for her first father-daughter dance.

“She wanted to come down the stairs, and her prince charming, my husband, to be there, and everything to be this magical, special thing,” Huckabee Sanders shared with the audience. As she described preparing her daughter, Scarlett, for the evening, she expressed how proud and grateful she felt to be her parent. Becoming emotional, Huckabee Sanders recalled a moment when her daughter comforted her by saying, “It’s okay, mommy, one day you can be pretty too.”

Reflecting on these personal anecdotes, Huckabee Sanders stated, “So my kids keep me humble. Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn’t have anything keeping her humble.” She continued by mentioning that Harris should have learned humility after “four years of straight failure,” before introducing Donald Trump to the stage.

The crowd responded with boos at just the mention of Harris’ name. In a surprising turn, Trump began the event with kind words about the Vice President, sharing that they had a “very nice” conversation following a recent assassination attempt against him. “I have to say that President Biden called me yesterday; it was a very nice conversation,” Trump noted. He added praise for Harris, stating, “A little while ago, I got a very nice call from Kamala. It was very nice… and we appreciate that, but we have to take back our country.”

As the event progressed, Huckabee Sanders’ remarks drew considerable criticism. Kerstin Emhoff, the ex-wife of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, responded on social media, emphasizing that her children provide inspiration to enact positive changes in the world. She stated, “Kamala Harris has spent her entire career working for the people, ALL families. That keeps you pretty humble.”

Former Democratic Senate candidate Amy McGrath expressed concern over Huckabee Sanders’ personal remarks. She questioned why anyone would be “personally cold” and highlighted the issue in linking a woman’s worth to her parental status. Author Ella Dawson weighed in, labeling Huckabee Sanders a “hack nepo baby with no humility,” criticizing her for disparaging a woman of color who has worked hard to achieve her position.

The town hall event showcased not only Huckabee Sanders’ stance on family and political values but also highlighted the evident divides within political discourse. As these conversations continue, the impact of personal remarks on public figures, and the expectations placed on women in politics, remain focal points of debate.
