German Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz on Thursday called for the construction of a gas pipeline from Portugal, through Spain and France, to central Europe, in order to make it no longer dependent on Russia.

“Such a pipeline would greatly alleviate the current supply situation,” Scholz told reporters at a news conference in Berlin.

He said he had touched on the issue in talks with the leaders of Spain, Portugal, France and the European Commission in Brussels and had lobbied hard for the creation of such a project.
