The Secret Service is conducting an investigation into a tweet from Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and owner of X, which brought into question why there were no attempts to assassinate President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. This incident has attracted significant media attention.
According to reports from Bloomberg News, the Secret Service has chosen not to disclose any records related to the investigation, citing “enforcement proceedings.” This decision follows a Freedom of Information Act request aimed at uncovering the agency’s response to the content of Musk’s tweet.
In a recent exchange on X, Musk replied to a user who questioned why no one was trying to kill former President Donald Trump, stating, “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala.” Shortly after, Musk deleted the tweet, claiming that his sense of humor was misunderstood by the public.
Expressing his reflections on the matter, Musk noted, “One lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on X.”
A spokesperson for the Secret Service confirmed awareness of Musk’s tweet but refrained from providing additional commentary. Melissa McKenzie stated, “As a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving protective intelligence,” adding that the agency investigates all threats concerning those it protects.
This incident has sparked discussions among some Trump supporters, including Musk, who have drawn attention to the fact that the former president has faced two assassination attempts in recent months, while Biden and Harris have not encountered similar threats. One of the assassination attempts occurred during a rally in Pennsylvania, where a bullet narrowly missed Trump. Law enforcement recently thwarted another attempt when they apprehended a man armed with a gun near a golf course that Trump was visiting.
In light of these events, Musk expressed his support for Trump, particularly following the Butler incident.
While it is accurate to say that Vice President Harris has not faced an assassination attempt, several individuals have been arrested for threatening her since she took office in 2021. Notably, the FBI arrested a man last month for threatening Harris and other officials on a conservative social media platform called GETTR. In another instance, a man was apprehended near the Vice President’s residence equipped with a rifle and ammunition.
As noted by Bloomberg, the Secret Service routinely investigates both direct and implied threats towards individuals under their protection, which includes the President and Vice President. Typically, these investigations may conclude with a home visit from a Secret Service officer, as illustrated by comedian Kathy Griffin’s experience when her photo of a fake severed Trump head led to a two-month investigation by federal authorities without any charges being filed.
The White House has publicly condemned Musk’s post. In a statement, officials expressed that “violence should only be condemned, never encouraged or joked about,” describing Musk’s rhetoric as “irresponsible.”
A request for comment from Musk’s representatives was not immediately addressed, leaving the public without insight into his further thoughts on the matter.
