‘Shrek 5’ Officially Announced; Original Cast to Return

Some 14 years after Shrek lived happily ever after, he’s coming back for a fifth film starring the franchise’s original cast.

DreamWorks announced the news on Twitter, revealing that Shrek 5 is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026, featuring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.

Shrek 5, the first sequel in the franchise since 2010’s Shrek Forever After, will be directed by Walt Dohrn. Dohrn has a rich history with the series, having served as a writer and head of story on the three previous sequels.

The Shrek franchise is one of the most lucrative in film history. Including the two spinoff films — 2011’s Puss in Boots and 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish — the series has amassed more than $4 billion worldwide. This figure excludes home video sales, merchandising, soundtracks, and other forms of revenue. The franchise has also inspired theme park attractions and even a short-lived quesadilla.

Eddie Murphy has been particularly vocal about his desire to return to his role as Donkey. In January 2023, Murphy expressed his interest in reviving the character, either in a new Shrek sequel or a spinoff film. “I love Donkey. They did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie! Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots! I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t as funny as the Donkey,” Murphy quipped.

Shrek Forever After was marketed as “The Final Chapter.” However, the announcement of Shrek 5 seems to contradict that notion. The excitement surrounding this return serves as a reminder of why the series remains a beloved part of modern animation.

Shrek 5 is scheduled to open in theaters on July 1, 2026. The anticipation is building, and fans of the series can look forward to seeing their favorite characters back in action.
