Smartphones: Google ends production of the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4A 5G

The Pixel 5 is no longer manufactured. The Pixel 4A 5G is also no longer being built, Google confirmed to IT news site The Verge. Accordingly, Google expects that the remaining stocks of its smartphones will be sold out “in the coming” weeks.

According to The Verge you can no longer buy the Google cell phones in the Google store in the USA. In the German store, however, both the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4A 5G are still available. Both cell phones can be added to the shopping cart in black at the recommended price (630 euros for the Pixel 5, 500 euros for the Pixel 4A 5G).

Google only launched the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A 5G last fall, so the phones weren’t even produced for a year. It is not the first time that Google has ended the production of its smartphones after such a short time in favor of more current models: Before the start of last year’s versions, the Pixel 3a and the Pixel 4 were also discontinued.

While the Pixel 3a was at least a year and a half old at the time, the Pixel 4 was withdrawn from the market after less than a year – now this fate has reached other Google phones. This strategy is particularly curious because, after the remaining Google models have been sold out, no cell phones may be available in the Google Store, at least for a short time: The Pixel 5A 5G should be available at the end of August.

Google does not want to offer its new top model until autumn with the Pixel 6. The upcoming Google cell phone is equipped with a homemade Tensor SoC. The regular version of the Pixel 6 will have a 6.4-inch display with 90 Hertz, the Pro version of the upcoming Google flagship will have a 6.7-inch display with 120 Hertz and higher resolution. Google plans to reveal the full details of its new smartphones in the coming weeks or months. The price is not yet known either.
