Soldiers and sand mix in a Cancun guarded by troops

(Bloomberg) – On Dec. 1, 1,500 National Guard soldiers arrived in Cancun and nearby beaches after two deadly shootings raised security concerns in Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations. Drug-related violence increased in the area just as flights and hotel occupancy began to recover from the pandemic. The government intervened with the intention of protecting the economic revival of the area, and despite heavily armed troops in bulletproof vests clashing with the turquoise waves and fine sand, tourists have expressed their hope that the show of force will curb the crime wave.
