Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry has added another accomplishment to his already impressive list of accolades. This time, it’s in the world of golf. Curry claimed his first American Century Championship title on Sunday at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada. With a buzzer-beater putt on the 18th hole, Curry scored 25 points in the final round to secure the victory in the celebrity golf tournament.
Curry entered the tournament with a clear goal in mind – to win. And he achieved that goal with a clutch eagle on the 18th hole. With a total of 75 points, Curry claimed the top spot on the ACC leaderboard, surpassing retired tennis player Mardy Fish (73) and former San Jose Sharks star Joe Pavelski (66).
This win makes Curry just the third active professional athlete to win the American Century Championship, joining NHL superstar Mario Lemieux in 1998 and NFL kicker Al Del Greco in 2000. It’s a significant achievement for Curry, who expressed his desire to win the tournament before it began.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the tournament, Curry said, ‘Honestly, I feel like the way I’m approaching and where I feel my game is, I have the game to win it now. It’s just a matter of, can you do it? I can say it all I want to. I finished fourth twice, I think. So, it’s in there. It’s a matter of can I put it together for 54 holes and balance the fun and the focus that you need to have to play all three rounds and play great.’
Curry’s performance throughout the tournament was nothing short of exceptional. On Saturday, he made a hole-in-one on the seventh hole, becoming the first player in tournament history to achieve this feat on the par-3 seventh. And on Sunday, a birdie on the par-4 10th hole was the highlight of his round until the final stroke, as Fish led the round and tournament for most of the day. But Curry’s tournament-winning putt sealed the deal.
With this victory, Curry adds another milestone to his already illustrious career. As a four-time NBA champion, the NBA’s all-time 3-point leader, a two-time league MVP, and a nine-time All-Star, Curry has solidified his status as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. And now, he can add the title of American Century Championship champion to his list of accomplishments.
Curry’s win also marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Black winner in the tournament’s 34-year history. It’s a significant milestone that highlights the diversity and inclusivity of the sport.
Looking ahead, Curry’s victory at the American Century Championship serves as a testament to his dedication, skill, and competitive spirit. As he continues to excel in both basketball and golf, there’s no telling what other achievements he will accomplish in the future.
