A man received an unexpected compliment from none other than Harry Styles while enjoying a day out in London. However, there was a surprising twist: the man had no idea who Styles was.
Darnell Davis was taking a leisurely walk through central London last Sunday after enjoying a morning stroll in Regents Park. As he passed by a fellow pedestrian, he heard, “I like your fit.” Initially, Davis thought the comment was sarcastic or rude, but soon realized it was meant as a genuine compliment.
“I was flattered. I was like, ‘Thanks very much,'” Davis told a reporter on Thursday. “I’m all about sharing positivity, so I said, ‘You looking fly too!'” The two struck up a conversation, enjoying their exchange when suddenly, a woman behind them started shouting for a photo.
Thinking the woman wanted a picture of Davis due to his outfit, he was surprised when she clarified that she wanted a photo with the man he was speaking to. Puzzled, Davis stepped aside to allow the two to take a picture together. In the following moments, they were surrounded by a group of people eager to snap their own photos with Davis’ new friend, leaving him more confused than ever.
Amidst the chaotic excitement, Davis leaned over to his conversation partner and asked, “Who are you?” The reply came with a simple, “A singer.” Davis probed further and asked for his name, which led to the revelation that he was chatting with global pop sensation Harry Styles. However, the name still didn’t resonate immediately with Davis. To gain clarity, he excused himself and quickly searched for Styles on his phone.
The first information that popped up confirmed Styles’ status as a singer, but it was the date of birth that triggered an emotional response for Davis. “I saw my mother’s birthday,” he explained, sharing that they both share February 1. “And that’s when it just got really emotional.”
Davis, 49, is a former personal trainer now working as a writer. He lost his mother when he was just ten years old and has since maintained a morning ritual where he engages in spiritual conversations with her and God, often by the ocean. Unfortunately, London lacks nearby oceans, so during his visit to the city, he chose Regents Park to honor this routine.
“I just really feel connected with her there,” he said, recounting how he shared a heartfelt moment that morning. Davis expressed a wish that he be guided to the people who would lead him toward his life’s purpose.
Feeling uplifted after connecting with his mother, he snapped a few photos of himself, satisfied with how he looked in his outfit before heading out. It was then that he experienced the surprise encounter with Styles, which he referred to as a “cosmic twist” in his Instagram post.
But what exactly was Davis wearing that day? He mentioned that he may have picked up the printed two-piece outfit during one of his travels, possibly in Mexico. He doesn’t have a specific favorite brand or shop; rather, he tends to choose clothing that attracts his interest, whether online or in stores around the world.
“Your art is your expression of how you see yourself, and that’s what dressing is about; that’s what fashion is for me,” said Davis, who is also currently writing a book on self-love. “I don’t play any instruments. I’m not artistic in that sense, but my body and what I put on is an expression of who I am.”
Since that memorable encounter, Davis has been listening to Styles’ music on repeat, resonating with the artist’s tracks. When asked about his favorite song by Styles, he immediately responded with, “‘Treat People with Kindness.’ Because that’s how me and Harry met. He was just being kind to me; I was being kind back to him, and something phenomenal came from it.”
