Germans consume an average of seven hours of media every day, i.e. videos, audio content and texts. This emerges from a study commissioned by the ARD / ZDF research commission. According to this, moving image content and above all traditional television are the undisputed front runners, even if streaming services are increasing. People aged 14 and over spend a total of over 220 minutes a day with it. This is followed by audio content with almost 180 minutes and far behind texts with around 50 minutes. The usage shares within the individual media types have therefore shifted in recent years.

According to the study the classic television program (or recordings of it) is still the undisputed front runner, accounting for 71 percent of the consumption of videos. The rest was divided among media libraries (5 percent after 2 percent in 2018), streaming services (16 percent after 8 percent three years ago) and other internet offers (8 percent after 5 percent). When it comes to audio content, radio dominates with 75 percent (after 77 percent in 2018), clearly ahead of podcasts (3 percent) and streaming services (18 percent after 10 percent in 2018). The share of CDs, LPs, MP3s and downloads has therefore fallen from 10 percent of daily audio consumption in 2018 to 4 percent.

A printed newspaper or magazine is read by only 58 percent of the population at least once a week, it continues to say. But 75 percent of adults read articles in digital form. The public service clients of the study are pleased that 81 percent of people assume that public service broadcasting will remain indispensable. Compared to the private sector, its strength lies primarily in the journalistic quality and the relevance of the content, the survey showed.
