Taylor Swift Encourages Voter Registration at the VMAs

During the MTV 2024 Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Wednesday night, pop icon Taylor Swift passionately encouraged her fans to register to vote. While accepting the prestigious award for “Video of the Year” in Elmont, New York, Swift made a compelling appeal to those eligible.

“If you are over 18, please register to vote for something else that’s very important … presidential election,” she urged. This call to action came just a day after Swift voiced her support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election, which is now less than two months away.

In her Instagram post revealing her endorsement, Swift expressed her belief that Harris is a powerful advocate for the issues she champions. “She fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift mentioned, emphasizing her confidence in Harris’s leadership abilities.

Following Harris’s debate with her GOP opponent, former President Donald Trump, Swift described the Vice President as “a steady-handed, gifted leader” and asserted that the country could achieve greater progress under a leadership style defined by calm rather than chaos.

In a significant response to Swift’s announcement, the General Services Administration (GSA) reported that over 330,000 individuals visited vote.gov, indicating the impact of her endorsement on public engagement with the voting process.

However, Trump reacted dismissively to Swift’s backing of Harris. In an interview on “Fox & Friends,” he suggested that the singer might suffer consequences for her endorsement. “I was not a Taylor Swift fan,” he stated, implying that it was only a matter of time before she sided with a Democrat.

Trump continued, saying, “It couldn’t possibly be that she endorses Biden. … She’s a very liberal person, and she seems to always endorse a Democrat, and she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.” His comments highlight the polarized perceptions surrounding celebrity endorsements in the political arena.

Swift’s endorsement was also met with support from Harris’s inner circle. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris’s running mate, expressed gratitude towards Swift for her backing. He notably referenced the derogatory term “childless cat lady,” aimed at Harris by Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, emphasizing how Swift’s words resonated with courage.

Walz remarked, “I say that as a cat owner, a fellow cat owner. That was eloquent, and that was clear. And that’s the type of courage we need in America to stand up.” His appreciation exemplifies how celebrity endorsements can elevate a campaign’s visibility and message.

The Harris campaign quickly capitalized on Swift’s endorsement, incorporating her support into their fundraising efforts. By leveraging Swift’s substantial fan base and the media attention surrounding her, the campaign aims to galvanize younger voters and enhance voter registration efforts ahead of the election.

In summary, Taylor Swift’s vocal advocacy during the VMAs and her endorsement of Kamala Harris are significant events that underscore the intersection of popular culture and political engagement. Her actions not only encourage voter participation but also illustrate the influence that celebrities can have on political discourse and outcomes.
