Taylor Swift showed her enthusiastic support as the Kansas City Chiefs clinched a thrilling victory against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 15. Following a game-winning field goal by kicker Harrison Butker, Swift was visibly excited, jumping up and down in celebration.
From her suite at Arrowhead Stadium, Swift was captured on CBS embracing fellow Chiefs fans, celebrating her boyfriend Travis Kelce and the team’s successful start to the season, improving their record to 2-0.
This moment of joy comes on the heels of some controversy surrounding Butker. Earlier this offseason, he delivered a contentious commencement speech at Benedictine College where he expressed traditional views on women’s roles and made remarks equating Pride Month to “deadly sin.”
In his address, the 29-year-old kicker referenced Swift and her relationship with Kelce, quoting a line from one of her songs. “As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘familiarity breeds contempt,’” he commented, referring to lyrics from Swift’s song “Bejeweled” from her 2022 album Midnights.
Butker continued his speech, congratulating the women in attendance and implying that most would be more excited about future family life than professional ambitions. He stated, “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
Despite the provocative nature of Butker’s comments, Swift has not publicly responded to his remarks. Butker signed a remarkable four-year, $26.5 million contract extension in August, becoming the highest-paid kicker in the NFL.
Kelce, who often addresses matters on his podcast “New Heights,” discussed Butker’s comments after they gathered attention. While expressing that he values Butker as a teammate, Kelce made it clear he does not agree with much of what Butker said. He remarked, “I can’t say I agree with the majority of it — or just about any of it — outside of just him loving his family or his kids.”
Despite the surrounding circumstances, Swift’s support for Kelce has been unwavering. Earlier during the same game, Swift was caught on camera expressing her concern when Kelce fell just short of a touchdown. “Oh my God, Travis! Oh my God! Oh my God!” she exclaimed, her enthusiasm evident.
Following Swift’s reaction, CBS analyst Jim Nantz could not resist making light of the situation. “Someone wanted a touchdown! Someone wanted to see six after she got seven Wednesday night at the VMAs!” Nantz quipped, referencing Swift’s impressive haul of seven MTV Video Music Awards just days prior.
The Kansas City Chiefs will be back on the field next Sunday, September 22, as they prepare for a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Fans are eagerly anticipating another exciting performance from both the team and Swift’s spirited support.
