The Dropout, a new Hulu/Disney Plus drama, is based on the incredible true tale of Elizabeth Holmes and her firm Theranos. Amanda Seyfried, an Academy Award nominee, portrays the entrepreneur who attracted big-money investors with her innovative idea for a new way to do blood tests.

She imagined a device that would be more practical and pleasant than traditional venous sampling, with quick results obtained by removing only a tiny amount of blood – such as from a finger prick.

True tale of the dropout

The Dropout is based on the actual tale of Elizabeth Holmes and her business Theranos, which had technology that was thought to revolutionize healthcare for years to come. Their offering was a novel sort of blood test that could provide quick findings for a wide range of health concerns, all of which could be performed with a painless sample.

At the heart of it, all was a machine called Edison, which was about the size of a regular microwave and was designed to serve as a mini-laboratory where all of these experiments could be carried out. Theranos was valued at $10 billion at its peak of popularity, yet the technology underpinning its primary product simply didn’t exist.

Things started to fall apart for Holmes more than a decade after her firm was formed when the Wall Street Journal published a story explaining how the company had “struggled” to bring its breakthrough vision into reality. This set in motion a disastrous chain of events for Theranos, which culminated in the company’s demise in 2018 and Holmes’ net worth plummeting from an estimated $4.5 billion to nothing.
