Do you remember the “big remake” that PlayStation was going to announce next Christmas? Good news, JRPG fans: It could be Square Enix’s beloved classic, Chrono Cross.

According to Nick Baker of Xbox Era, in a recent podcast, the so-called “big remake” mentioned by folk singer Éabha McMahon on an Irish radio station in October is, in effect, a remastering of the sequel / spinoff of Chrono Trigger from the original PlayStation era, and what’s more, Baker’s sources tell him that will be “cross-platform” rather than exclusive to PlayStation.

Notably, a remastering of Chrono Cross was also among the many titles that appeared in Nvidia’s GeForce Now games leak in September. Although the list has so far been imprecise and Nvidia has claimed that the titles were “speculative”, some of the games in that leak have turned out to be real, like the recent remastering of the GTA trilogy.

Chrono Cross is a much loved classic that MRT loved it when it first launched in 2000Although it has had a mixed reception due to the strange space it occupies as a kind of spin off of the alternate universe of Chrono Trigger rather than a direct sequel. Unlike its predecessor, Chrono Cross has not received any adaptation or new content on other platforms, which means that the only legitimate way to play it is to have an original PlayStation or PS2 and a physical copy of the game.

And although throughout the years There’s been a lot of talk about a Chrono sequel, no one has yet emerged. For now, if you want to enjoy something similar to the Chrono games, you will have to turn to projects made by some of the same team members, such as the Another Eden or Fantasian mobile games.
