David Bromstad has faced many tragic experiences over the years. However, one particularly frightening moment stands out for the HGTV star. As fans recall, his father, Richard Bromstad, once faced a severe heart-related issue, prompting the “My Lottery Dream Home” star to ask his fans to pray for his father’s health.
In August 2016, David took to Facebook to share a concerning update about his father’s heart. “My dad is back in the hospital and will be there for several more days. His valves are freaking out and he is having major fluttering. His resting heart rate was 136, which is very high. They are monitoring him for seizures and a heart attack,” he shared. Heartbreakingly, David added that Richard didn’t feel optimistic about his chances of survival. “He is very discouraged,” David said.
Despite the grim circumstances, David asked his followers to keep Richard in their thoughts as he faced the complications. “I need your help… If you could please pray he makes it through this very trying time,” he pleaded. Thankfully, his fans were eager to share their well wishes. Luckily for the Bromstad family, Richard pulled through.
It’s clear that David Bromstad was relieved to see his father survive the health scare. Since then, he’s shared numerous sweet snaps of their time together and posted in Richard Bromstad’s honor, expressing how great a dad he is.
Just weeks after the scare, Bromstad took to Instagram to share a picture of himself and Richard hanging out in golf carts. A few months later, he posted a series of images of the Bromstad family Christmas across his social media profiles. The Bromstad siblings and their parents appeared to be enjoying themselves, with movie dates and church services part of the celebration. David hinted that big, busy family Christmases were normal for the Bromstad clan, even without his father’s health scare, as his posts often referenced family traditions.
Beyond the general family posts, David has honored his father with more personalized messages over the years. For Father’s Day 2018, he shared an Instagram post referring to Richard as, “My hero, best friend and inspiration, and the guy who taught me goofy facial expressions.” In 2021, he gushed even more, posting on Instagram again, “Thank you for teaching me to be compassionate, kind, confident, and of course, silly!” It’s safe to say that these two share a close bond.
David Bromstad received more than just goofiness and compassion from his dad. The interior designer has also spoken about how Richard Bromstad influenced his career path.
Before venturing into design, David had a job at Disney. As it turns out, his dad was highly supportive of him reaching that milestone. In a 2021 interview with The List, David shared that Richard became strategic in helping him achieve his dream of working for Disney. “Once he got behind it, he said, ‘Do you want to work for Disney? Great. We’re going to put you in the best school, or at least do the research.'” While David eventually left Disney to pursue his love for design, he did work at the parks and even hosted the 2009 “Disney Holidays: Behind the Magic” special. David appreciated his dad’s support in helping him enter a creative career. “He saw my talent as an artist, which was hard to do,” David noted in his interview with The List.
From their playful dynamic to Richard’s supportiveness, it’s no wonder that he and David remain so close. We’re relieved to hear that Richard made it through his health scare and wish him all the best moving forward!
