Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye star in the highly acclaimed series called “The Idol.” These two series have captured the attention of Jorge Lanata, who admits that he and his partner cannot tear themselves away from the small screen. The series premiered on HBO Max in May and June 2023, with “Succession” and “The Idol” becoming their top picks. While “Succession” was well-received by fans of American plots, “The Idol” faced stronger criticism.

Controversy Surrounding “The Idol”

“The Idol” premiered last June and quickly became one of the most-watched and controversial series on the streaming platform. Produced by Sam Levinson, known for his work on “Euphoria,” the show consists of four one-hour episodes, with the final episode scheduled for release on July 2nd. The story revolves around Jocelyn, portrayed by Lily-Rose Depp, a young American pop star who falls in love with the owner of a famous club in Los Angeles, played by Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd. However, her life takes a dark turn as she becomes involved with a self-help guru and cult leader, who leads her into a contemporary sect.

The explicitness of sex scenes and violence depicted in the series generated significant controversy upon its release on June 4th. As a result, one episode was removed from the first season, and the show will conclude with a 5-episode installment, with the final episodes set to be released soon. Lily-Rose Depp’s portrayal of explicit nudity in some scenes drew criticism from the public, though her father, Johnny Depp, expressed pride in her performance. According to a source close to the actor, Johnny Depp supports his daughter’s success and believes that she is making a name for herself in the industry, independent of her father’s fame.
