The Last Message Before the Implosion

In June 2023, a tragic incident claimed the lives of five passengers aboard the Titan submersible, operated by OceanGate Inc. The vessel was on a mission to explore the wreck of the Titanic when it failed to return safely to the surface. After a four-day search, it was confirmed that the submersible had imploded during its descent.

More than a year after the disaster, details surrounding the Titan’s final moments have begun to emerge.

The Titan embarked on its ill-fated journey off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Approximately one hour and 45 minutes into the expedition, the vessel lost communication with its support ship, the Polar Prince. Once the Titan failed to resurface, authorities were alerted, prompting a search effort for the missing passengers.

Four days later, the search yielded wreckage resembling the Titan at the ocean’s floor, located about 500 meters from the Titanic’s resting place. Following this discovery, officials announced that the Titan’s pressure hull had imploded during its descent, resulting in the immediate death of all five individuals aboard.

In September 2024, Tym Catterson, a former contractor for OceanGate, testified about the safety of the submersible leading up to the incident. He stated that there were “no red flags” regarding the vessel on the day of its voyage.

Catterson emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting, “Considering who was in the cab with Stockton at that particular time — there are two billionaires in there with him — I would absolutely guarantee that he’s trying to make sure that this just goes as absolutely perfect and spot-on as he can.” He described the atmosphere onboard leading up to the tragedy as charged, with “theories that were just flying around between people that were totally without sleep and very anxious.”

The five passengers aboard the Titan included notable figures such as Pakistani-British businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood. They were accompanied by British businessman Hamish Harding, former French Navy commander and submersible pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet, along with Stockton Rush, an American submersible pilot and engineer.

In September 2024, the final message from the Titan was made public. According to reports from ABC News, the last transmission, received at a depth of 2,274 meters, was a simple assurance: “All good here.” Alongside this revelation, a photograph of the remnants of OceanGate’s Titan was also shared.

The incident raised numerous questions about the safety protocols and operational procedures associated with deep-sea exploration. As investigations continue, families and friends of the victims seek closure while the world reflects on the risks involved in such daring expeditions.
