Good news and bad news at the same time. The good news is that 2022 will start with cinema through the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). The bad news is that it will be reduced and restricted because of the Omicron variant. Planned to be the first in-person festival of the year, everything changed at the last minute and it will have to be virtual.

At the beginning of December 2021, it was announced that the 51st edition of the IFFR could have the physical presence of organizers, participants, press and workers. However, in the penultimate week of the month it was announced that it should be done online as a health measure.

The measure to suspend physical and face-to-face activities was taken after the government of the Netherlands decreed a strict quarantine for its population until mid-January. To prevent, the festival organization chose to cancel some activities, as well as take action with the exhibition of selected titles.

A press conference is scheduled for the first week of January to inform that there may be a reduced selection available in streaming for the general public. Similarly, the press and professionals would have restricted access to certain content. And this change depends on distributors who prefer to withdraw materials considering that they must be seen on the big screen.
