The snap of Thanos’s gauntlet would be impossible in real life, but not for the reason you think: scientists respond

Superhero movies ask us to suspend our disbelief, but one of the most iconic moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe it has been proven impossible for reasons other than what you might expect.

Thanos’ snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War caused half the population of the entire universe to disappear. Although the supernatural part is unrealistic, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology (via livescience) discovered that Thanos’ act of snapping his fingers while wearing the Infinity Gauntlet was impossible to perform. What a surprise, right? There is not everything.

According to the study, a snap of the fingers is the “fastest acceleration of the human body ever measured“, and the physics involved should have been impossible for Thanos while wearing the gauntlet.

Basically, the study says that the acceleration of a finger while snapping is incredibly high– Three times faster than the arm acceleration of a professional baseball player during a pitch. A click lasts only seven milliseconds, that is, more than 20 times faster than a blink.

To perform such a fast maneuver, the study says that the most important component is friction. The researchers found that attempting to click with metal gloves does not generate enough friction.

Our results suggest that Thanos couldn’t have snapped because of his metal armored fingers“said author Raghav Acharya.”So it’s probably Hollywood special effects, rather than actual physics, that are at stake!“.

Regardless of its viability, the MCU continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Avengers’ mission to reverse the impact of the snap. Marvel fans are looking forward to Spider-Man: No Road Home, which opens next month. Recently, Michael Keaton has confirmed his return to the MCU as Vulture, although we do not yet know for which movie (or series).
