This figure is equivalent to 7.2% less than the 2019-2020 sugar harvest in Guatemala when 60,091,567 quintals of production were reached (2.76 million tons).
In Guatemala, 253,000 hectares of sugarcane are cultivated, especially on the southern coast of the Central American country, and the reduction in production, according to sugar producers, is due to climatic issues.
NEW VARIETY OF CANE
For this harvest, the mills promoted a variety of sugarcane called CG02-163 that was designed by scientists from the Guatemalan Center for Research and Training in Sugarcane (Cengicaña), which is high-yielding, resistant to diseases and adapts to variability. climatic.
According to Asazgua, this variety produces between 11.5 to 12.5 tons of sugar per cultivated hectare, which represents 1.4 tons more than the CP72-2086 variety that occupies the second place, which comes from Canal Point in Florida, United States.
The general manager of the institution, Luis Miguel Paiz, told journalists that the investigation has contributed to improving the efficiency of the harvest and has allowed Guatemala to be more competitive worldwide.
