Las Vegas, a neon paradise emerged in the middle of the North American desert, has it all, but everything. And if at 3 in the morning you need 50 kilos of bubble gum, you will surely find it. So imagine this: You arrive at the Las Vegas airport, and you need to go to the Strip, the stadium or the Convention Center, but you do not feel like eating the heavy traffic of the city.
Well, very easy: You go under the city in a specially built tunnel and also in a Tesla brand car … Rich whims? Yes, but soon a reality within the reach of many more people, since that will pass. That’s what The Boring Company, the company owned by Elon Musk, is going to do.
Tunnels under Las Vegas with Tesla cars
The following is an excerpt of what can be read at The Boring Company website -yes, the same one that launched the portable and cheap flamethrower for everyone:
“To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go in 3D, which means flying cars or tunnels are needed. Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weather resistant, out of sight, and won’t fall on your head.
The tunnels minimize the use of valuable surface land and do not conflict with existing transportation systems. A large network of tunnels can alleviate congestion in any city; no matter how big a city is, you can add more levels of tunnels “.
The company has just obtained approval from local authorities to advance the construction of a network of vehicle tunnels under Las Vegas. Dubbed the “Vegas Loop,” the system will allow passengers to ride in Tesla vehicles to and from places like the Las Vegas Strip casino hotels, the city’s new football stadium, the Las Vegas Convention Center and McCarran International Airport.
The Vegas Loop, baby
The Boring Company already operates a small version of this “Teslas in Tunnels” system under the Las Vegas Convention Center, which opened earlier this year and involves two 1.2 kilometer tunnelss. But Musk’s startup proposed a massive city-wide expansion in December 2020 that largely aligns with what Clark County officials approved Wednesday.
The approved system It is much larger, since it includes a network of 46 kilometers of tunnels with 51 stations to interconnect the different routes, all with Tesla for transport, so it will be also quiet, ecological. Clark County says up to 57,000 passengers will be able to ride through it per hour and most importantly: No taxpayer money will be spent to build it.
No more expensive than a taxi / Boring pays for construction
The Boring Company previously said that would pay the bill for the construction of the main tunnels, but he planned to ask hotel casinos or other businesses who wanted a station to pay for those construction costs. Each of those stops has to go through its own permitting process, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The Boring Company has already indicated that the price of the Vegas Loop system is somewhere between most public transportation and the cost of a taxi or a collective transport service. Expect an eight-kilometer trip from the airport to the Convention Center to take about 5 minutes and costs 10 dollars (8.6 euros), and that an 8-kilometer trip from the Convention Center to the soccer stadium takes 4 minutes and costs $ 6 (€ 5.16).
