The hope of many fans, when the renewal was announced, was that Netflix might be able to release the season in 2021. Although there was more than a year of the gap between the first and second seasons, Netflix was able to shoot the new seasons relatively close to each other, with Season 1 kicking off in February 2019 and Season 2 in July 2020.
However, 2021 is almost in the books and it has now been confirmed with certainty by Netflix that the third season of The Umbrella Academy will not come in 2021.
Why didn’t a new season of The Umbrella Academy air in 2021?
Considering that Netflix has released a season of The Umbrella Academy every year since its debut in 2019, many fans expected Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy to fall in 2021. Unfortunately, the series was one of many series whose production began later than expected due to the pandemic, with filming only ending in August 2021.
Due to the magnitude of the effects added to the series in post-production, it usually takes several months to complete the series once filming is complete, which is probably the main reason why no new seasons have been launched in 2021.
Release date of season 3 of The Umbrella Academy
While fans may not have been treated to a new season of The Umbrella Academy in 2021, the good news is that fans won’t have to wait much longer for the next season of Netflix’s hit comic book drama!
While the exact date has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, it has been announced that Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy will air on Netflix in 2022, as part of the streaming giant’s Geeked Genre programming.
Considering that Netflix has confirmed the exact release dates of several series set to debut in January and February 2022, it seems likely that Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy could be released in March 2022 at the earliest. Of course, it’s also possible that Netflix is looking to retain Season 3 for the summer, with another July release date for the series.
While we’ll have to wait and see when exactly Netflix chooses to release Season 3, the good news is that we know for sure that Season 3 will arrive in 2022 and won’t be delayed until 2023!
