The president of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated last night in an armed attack, the country’s prime minister, Claude Joseph, confirmed in a statement.
Around one in the morning, a group of unknown individuals, “some of whom spoke Spanish,” attacked the president’s private residence and fatally wounded him, the document said.

The first lady, Martine Moïse, was wounded by a gunshot during the attack and is being treated at a hospital.
Meanwhile, the prime minister and the National Police have condemned “this hateful, inhuman and barbarous act“, while they have called the population to calm down, affirming that the security situation in the country” is under the control “of the Police and the Armed Forces.
“All measures are taken to guarantee the continuity of the State and to protect the Nation,” the statement said, to conclude that “democracy and the Republic will win.”
