Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has expressed his support for Manchester City midfielder Rodri’s recent warning about the possibility of a player strike due to the overwhelming number of games. This statement arose during a news conference where Rodri highlighted the growing concern among players regarding the hectic fixture schedule.
Rodri indicated that players feel strongly about the situation, suggesting that if the current conditions persist, they might eventually have to resort to strike action. “I think it’s the general opinion of the players… If it keeps this way, there will be a moment where we have no other option,” Rodri stated.
Both Real Madrid and Manchester City are navigating the challenges of UEFA’s updated Champions League format this season. Additionally, they are preparing for FIFA’s new Club World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in the United States next summer. This could lead both clubs to exceed a staggering total of 70 matches over the course of the campaign.
Courtois responded to Rodri’s remarks with agreement, elaborating on the high demand placed on players. In a conversation with Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos, he remarked, “Rodri is right. There are a lot of games. A fan wants to see the best, and we have to find a balance, there are too many games, and there are more injuries.”
The Belgian goalkeeper emphasized the need for a more manageable schedule, pointing to the additional commitments posed by events like the Nations League and Club World Cup. “People say we earn a lot of money, that we can’t complain, and that’s true, but we have to find a balance, because the best [players] aren’t always going to be able to play,” he stressed.
In terms of performance, Real Madrid secured a victory in their Champions League opener, defeating Stuttgart 3-1. However, the team has struggled to find its rhythm in La Liga, currently sitting four points behind the league leaders, Barcelona.
Questions regarding the future of forward Rodrygo have circulated, particularly in light of Kylian Mbappé’s arrival at the club. Despite these rumors, Rodrygo assisted Mbappé with his first Champions League goal for Real Madrid during the match against Stuttgart.
The media has begun referring to Real Madrid’s attacking trio as “BMV” – an acronym for Bellingham, Mbappé, and Vinícius. However, this catchphrase notably excludes Rodrygo, which has not gone unnoticed.
Courtois defended Rodrygo’s importance to the team, stating, “Journalists want to put three letters, and they put Jude, Vini and Mbappé. In the dressing room we know the importance and quality of Rodrygo. He doesn’t have to get angry, but if he plays better, let him get angry.”
As the season unfolds, the debate surrounding player workload and fixture congestion is expected to intensify, drawing attention from fans, players, and officials alike. The potential for increased player unrest looms as both clubs and governing bodies grapple with scheduling and the demands of modern football.
