‘This Is Us’ Chrissy Metz Talks About Kate and Toby’s Relationship

Saying goodbye to a series is always painful, not only for fans but for the actors who lived and felt each episode as part of their life. Actress Chrissy Metz as Kate in This Is Us, the only child of Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia). His life in the series has been very intense since the time he first appeared on-screen celebrating his 33rd birthday with his brothers Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown).

Owner of a heavenly voice, Kate struggles with an overweight that haunts her since childhood and also with the early loss of her father. The arrival of love in her life changed and changed many of the insecurities Kate grew up with. Toby (Chris Sullivan) is that love, a protective man who didn’t let the outside world harass her.

Things seemed to be going great between them but in the last season, we saw how Kate was preparing to marry another man. It was Phill (Chris Geere), a character who was introduced in the fifth season and is Kate’s boss at the music school where she teaches singing.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Metz talked about this new relationship that wasn’t taken up with much joy by fans. “It was never going to be Randall and Beth,” he said in the interview in reference to the love story between Kate and Toby. He also pointed out that there are no culprits or victims here. Simply sometimes love alone is not enough and relationships end.

The actress also referred to the new chapters and somehow spoiled something of the plot:

“People are going to be on the edge of their seats with the health issues of the characters. In addition, we will see what this means for the family and the decisions that need to be made. We will see the end of the journey of two very important characters and that is always so difficult. It’s going to be a lot.”

We all know that Rebecca is at a very difficult stage regarding her mental health and that they are probably referring to her. But who is the other character who doesn’t go anymore? Let’s remember that this series gave us great blows to the followers. The deaths of Jack Pearson and that of Randall’s biological father were two extremely tearful moments of This Is Us (just to mention a few of them).

Kate and Toby

Metz managed to highlight another of his talents this season which is writing. She was in charge of writing the 9th episode of the sixth season, which clearly has her as the protagonist. “It will be a massive turning point for Kate and Toby,” she said. Precisely, Mandy Moore is in charge of directing the chapter that Chrissy wrote: “Kate wants to save the marriage. She knows there is a kind of disconnect. Then she’s going to try to save him and… we’ll see what happens. They both want this so beautiful, but sometimes we don’t get what we want.”

Recall that in the last season Toby received a job proposal (after several months of being unemployed) but must move to San Francisco.

For now, we can only wait for the premiere of the sixth and final season of This Is Us on January 4 on the Star+ platform. Of course, prepare handkerchiefs because you are going to cry, and a lot.
