Larger companies and schools cannot sensibly set up iOS devices individually for many employees and students. For this purpose, Apple provides the Apple Business Manager (ABM) web service or the identical Apple School Manager (ASM) in order to prepare thousands of devices wirelessly and efficiently for the requirements in combination with a third-party mobile device management system (MDM) and set up.
If the devices were purchased from an authorized Apple dealer (DEP dealer), this process can be completely automatic. In order for this to work, the DEP dealers’ merchandise management systems are digitally connected to that of Apple. Apple previously called this process the “Device Enrollment Program”; since the ABM was introduced in late 2019, it has been called “Automated Device Enrollment”.
If, on the other hand, you have purchased a device from a non-DEP dealer or want to manually reintegrate a device that has been removed from the ABM, admins have been able to use the one offered free of charge for a long time Apple Configurator 2 Take (AC2) for macOS. So far, the app has only communicated with iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV. With iOS 15 and macOS Monterey, Macs can now also be stored in the Apple Business Manager. We’ll show you how.
