In a historic moment for women’s basketball, Tina Charles surpassed Sylvia Fowles to become the WNBA’s all-time rebounding leader. Achieving this milestone, Charles recorded her 4,007th rebound during a game on Thursday night.
Entering the game against the Atlanta Dream, Charles needed just three rebounds to reach the record. She swiftly accomplished this goal in the first quarter. The record-breaking rebound came from an offensive tap-out, which led to a basket just under four minutes into the game.
At 35 years old, Charles has had a storied career that began with the Connecticut Sun. In 2014, she was traded to the New York Liberty, where she blossomed into one of the league’s premier players. Following her time in New York, she played for the Washington Mystics, Phoenix Mercury, and Seattle Storm before joining the Atlanta Dream this season. Notably, she sat out the previous season.
Throughout her 14-year career, Charles has maintained an impressive average of 9.3 rebounds per game. Her contributions on the court have led her to achieve 193 double-doubles, tying Sylvia Fowles for the most in WNBA history.
Before the game, Charles received special recognition as she was inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame. This honor was celebrated alongside nine other esteemed former players and coaches. During the ceremony, her Dream teammates gathered on the court to support her, demonstrating the strong camaraderie within the team.
In addition to her rebounding success, Charles stands out as the only player in WNBA history to tally over 7,000 points and 4,000 rebounds in her career. Currently, she ranks second on the league’s all-time scoring list, following the legendary Diana Taurasi.
The evening marked a significant milestone not only for Charles but also for women’s basketball, as her achievements continue to inspire players and fans alike. With each game, she proves the impact that skill, determination, and hard work can have in the sport.
As the WNBA season progresses, fans will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on Charles as she continues to build on her already remarkable legacy. Her journey through the league highlights the evolution of women’s sports and the growing recognition of athletes who have paved the way for future generations.
With a blend of talent and tenacity, Tina Charles has etched her name in the history books, leaving an indelible mark on the WNBA that will be remembered for years to come.
