Transport approves its railway plan until 2026 with more than 24,000 million

The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has approved the Indicative Railway Strategy for the period 2021-2026, which includes mobilizing 24,200 million euros in investments.

As published this Friday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), Minister Raquel Sánchez signed on December 23 the ministerial order that gives the green light definitively to this plan.

The Mitma maintains that it will mean a modification in the usual paradigm of programming based solely on new public investment, since the purpose is that the investment policy is linked to enhancing the mobility of passengers and goods, to optimize the capacity of the network, to increase spending on conservation and maintenance and to enable environmental sustainability, as well as to improve social cohesion.

A paradigm shift that implies moving towards sustainable mobility, taking into account the need to reduce energy consumption and decarbonize the economy in the fight against climate change.

The Indicative Strategy 2021-2026 is the highest ranking instrument within railway sectoral planning and, among other objectives, aims to strengthen the freight network, European corridors and interoperability, to create a single railway space throughout the European Union.

It also seeks to correct the shortcomings and imbalances of the railway network, where very modern infrastructures coexist with obsolete ones and sections at the limit of their capacity with others clearly underused.
