Donald Trump has pledged to be a “protector” of women should he reclaim the presidency in the upcoming November election. Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump finds himself trailing Kamala Harris by five points according to recent polling data.
During the rally, the former president addressed the “great women of our country,” claiming that their situations have worsened over the past four years. He stated that women are now “poorer,” “less healthy,” and “less safe on the streets.” Trump insisted that he intends to rectify these issues swiftly, declaring, “I will fix all of that, and fast. This national nightmare will end.”
Defining himself as a protector, he said, “Because I am your protector. I want to be your protector. As president, I have to be your protector.” He also cautioned against media misinterpretation, stating, “I hope you don’t make too much of it. I hope the fake news doesn’t go, ‘Oh he wants to be their protector.’ Well, I am.”
Trump also asserted that under his presidency, abortion will no longer be a concern for women. This statement comes as recent polling indicates that Harris holds a significant 21-point lead over Trump among female voters nationally. According to a new NBC News survey, 58 percent of women support Harris, while only 37 percent favor Trump.
Harris’s lead extends to key battleground states such as Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. A New York Times poll places Harris at 51 percent in those states, with Trump at 45 percent. Observing these figures, Trump remarked, “I always thought women liked me. I never thought I had a problem. But the fake news keeps saying women don’t like me. I don’t believe that.”
The response from women to Trump’s comments has been swift and sharp. Some analysts have labeled his remarks as “disgusting.” Alencia Johnson, a former senior advisor to the Biden 2020 campaign, noted the irony of Trump’s claim, pointing out that he was found liable for sexual abuse against writer E. Jean Carroll. Johnson said, “It is so disgusting. Seeing that line, ‘I am your protector’ makes me think about the fact that he was found liable for sexual assault. Some women would say that he is their predator. He’s running scared.”
The Harris campaign was also quick to respond to Trump’s efforts to sway female voters at the rally. Campaign spokesperson Sarafina Chitika stated, “Trump keeps trying to tell women that our health, our freedoms, and our lives don’t matter. He tries to tell us what to think and what we care about.”
Chitika further emphasized, “Women know better – and we will not be silenced, dismissed, ignored, or treated like we’re stupid. We will vote like our lives depend on it this November, and we’ll elect a leader who fights for us: Vice President Kamala Harris.”
As the election rapidly approaches, the dynamics between Trump and Harris, especially among female voters, may play a crucial role in shaping the outcome. Both candidates are making strategic moves to appeal to this significant demographic, as polling suggests it could determine the election. With Trump’s remarks igniting strong reactions, the focus will remain on how women respond in the upcoming months.
