During a rally on Wednesday night, Donald Trump suggested he has not yet read Melania Trump’s new memoir, despite urging his supporters to purchase it.
“People love our First Lady. Go out and get a book. She just wrote a book. I hope she said good things about… I don’t know. I didn’t… so busy,” Trump stated at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.
He went on to say, “She just wrote a book called Melania. Go out and buy it, and if she says bad things about me, I’ll call you all up and I’ll say, don’t buy it.”
In a promotional video for her memoir earlier this month, Melania Trump addressed the “truth” surrounding the first assassination attempt against her husband on July 13. During a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman named Thomas Matthew Crooks, aged 20, opened fire, grazing Trump and tragically resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.
Subsequently, a second would-be assassin, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was apprehended after his rifle was spotted by a Secret Service agent at a Trump golf course in Florida, while the former president was playing golf on a Sunday. Trump praised the vigilance of a woman who took a photograph of Routh’s license plate, which led to his arrest.
Melania Trump has remained largely absent from the campaign trail. Although she attended the Republican National Convention, she did not deliver a speech, a traditional role for the nominee’s spouse. Furthermore, she has avoided attending her husband’s ongoing hush-money trial related to payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels regarding an alleged affair from 2006. Donald Trump has denied any wrongdoing in this matter. He was found guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, with sentencing pending after the upcoming election in November.
The former First Lady’s memoir, titled Melania, is scheduled for release on September 24.
Donald Trump’s reading habits have been a topic of discussion, particularly in contrast to former President Barack Obama, who is known for being an avid reader. In 2016, Trump mentioned that his two favorite books were his own publications: The Art of the Deal, published in 1987, and Surviving at the Top, released in 1990. It is also believed he has read Erich Maria Remarque’s World War I novel, All Quiet on the Western Front. In a 2015 interview, when asked about a favorite Bible passage, Trump declined to share, stating it was too personal.
In his controversial book, Fire and Fury, journalist Michael Wolff portrayed Trump as someone who “didn’t process information in any conventional sense,” stating, “He didn’t read. He didn’t really even skim. Some believed that for all practical purposes he was no more than semi-literate.”
During the rally on Wednesday night, Trump also intensified his critiques against Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, accused the Biden administration of collaborating with Iran in connection with the hacking of his campaign, and reiterated his stance on immigration, blaming Vice President Kamala Harris for the increase in unlawful crossings at the southern border.
